For three days running motorists and passengers have been experiencing untold hardship at Awka, Oko and Onitsha cities of Anambra state as commercial tipper lorry drivers continue to use trucks to block major roads.

The protest which started at Upper Iweka, Onitsha has spread to other cities as the lorry union drivers continued to confront the government over exorbitant levies.

In Awka, the state capital the gridlock that lasted for over four hours on Thursday was attributed to protest by the tipper drivers over alleged one hundred percent increase on charges for them to pay N1000 per trip of sand to the coffers of state government.

According to one of the tipper drivers who pleaded anonymity, the money was too much considering the return they make to owners of tippers.

Some motorists interviewed urged government to quickly rescind its alleged decision to avert further ugly situation like the one witnessed today.

It took intervention of some passengers, particularly, those traveling to far areas such as Abuja, Kano, Lagos and Benin for the roads to be cleared and vehicular movements continued.

However, hawkers of soft drinks, food vendors are making their businesses with stranded passengers patronizing them.
