Revelation has emerged that the Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State gave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus N3 billion to secure the governorship ticket for his political son, Senator Douye Diri in the November 16, 2019 election in the state.

To this end, it was gathered that former President Goodluck Jonathan, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike are angry with the national chairman for betraying an alleged arrangement which would have seen former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Timi Alaibe, emerge the PDP candidate.

It was further gathered that Jonathan has resolved not to participate in the campaign activities of the PDP in the state. The former president who hails from Bayelsa was conspicuously absent at the formal commencement of the Senator Diri’s campaign in Bayelsa recently.

Recall that Alaibe has since gone to court to challenge the outcome of the party primaries which he described as a sham. Senator Diri has emerged the candidate of the party.

Alaibe had in a statement signed by the administrative secretary of the Alaibe Campaign Organisation, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, said “on Friday, September 13, 2019, Alaibe approached the Federal High Court in Yenogoa Judicial Division, Bayelsa State with an application for cancellation of the result of the primary election based on cited procedural flaw

“The suit filed pursuant to Order 3(9) of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019, seeks answers to questions bordering on obvious non-adherence to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act 2010, the Peoples Democratic Party Constitution and Election Guidelines, by the State Chapter of the party in the conduct of the Ward Congresses, inclusion of local government council officials in the delegates list and the procedure for inclusion of three ad-hoc delegates.

“Citing specific sections of relevant laws and guidelines, Alaibe is asking the court to examine the entire processes that resulted in the primaries and rule in his favour in the light of violations committed in a desperate move to impose a pre-determined hand-picked candidate on the people out of 21 aspirants.”

Alaibe who enjoyed the support of Jonathan in the run up to the primaries has been a close associate of Obasanjo who is said to be instrumental to the former NDDC boss’ embattled governorship ambition.

Wike, a loyal political son of the Jonathan family, also backed Alaibe’s governorship ambition, it was learnt.

It was gathered that Wike tried to use his leverage over Secondus, having installed him as National Chairman of PDP to ensure that Alaibe would emerge candidate of the party but that the plan didn’t work as Secondus acted otherwise.

Wike is also said to have locked in a superiority battle with Dickson over the soul of the PDP, a situation which peaked during the last PDP presidential primaries. Wike supported Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal while Dickson backed former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who eventually emerged the candidate.

A party source, who confided in Pointblanknews.com said “Dickson gave N3billion to the national chairman to back the Bayelsa PDP candidate. That is one of the anger Wike has for Secondus.

“All the PDP candidates are angry and have vowed to teach Dickson a lesson. He picked Doyle’s running mate without the consultations of the elders. Jonathan has vowed he won’t be campaigning for the PDP candidate.

“Jonathan preferred Alaibe same as former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Jonathan has said he won’t be around that he would going overseas,” the source said.

The PDP has however appointed former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki as the chairman of the reconciliation committee for the Bayelsa and Kogi State governorship campaign which was inaugurated alongside the campaign councils last week.

The party also picked Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, a renowned political son of Jonathan as the chairman of the Bayelsa State campaign council.

Bayelsa Commissioner for information, Hon. Daniel Iworison-Markson said it is propaganda and not a true reflection of what transpired.

He said the state Governor has been going around mending fences with aggrieved PDP leaders.

Markson said the fence-mending efforts would yield the desired results ahead of the November elections.
