Investigation by The New Narrative Newspaper has revealed that some desperate Nigerian travelers have jettisoned the country’s international passport for other neighbouring African countries’ documents.
This is as another investigation revealed that some Nigerians denied visas by embassies or turned back at the port of entries, fraudulently apply for ‘Lost of Passport’ in order to obtain new travel document passport and render the former invalid.
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that some of the travelers in order to have easier access to Europe, America, Middle East and others, have deceitfully adopted international passports of countries like Ghana, Guinea, Mozambique, Niger and Senegal even with their Nigerian names.
A source close to the headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Abuja, confided in our correspondent over the weekend that most of the international passports of other countries such travelers travel out of Nigeria with were fake, which were obtained in the country.
The source however posited that several of them are detected at the international gateways of Nigeria especially at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos where close to a hundred of such travelers have been turned back.
Also, it was gathered that such fake travelling documents are regularly impounded at the international gateways of the country by the immigration officers while their owners are refused departure out of the country by the service.
However, investigation revealed that there is a chain of syndicates that indulge in the issuance of fake international passports to some of these travelers, which immigration service was yet to unravel.
The source stated further that most of the travelers who engage in this act were desperate to use those international passports to easily access Europe and other continents, saying that they erroneously believed that using the Green Passport (Nigerian passport), would make security officials of those countries to beam more searchlight on them, which he said was not usually the case.
The source disclosed that hundreds of such fake international passports are in the possession of immigration service in Abuja with most of such documents confiscated at the Lagos Airport Command office of the service.
The source said: “Some of such travellers want to travel with Ghanaian, Guinea and Senegalese passports and some even go as far as using Mozambique passport, but the moment we notice this at our gateways, we stop them from travelling. Ironically, most of these documents are fake. In fact, they are Oluwole papers.
“They believe that if you are holding a Nigerian passport, it may be difficult for you to access some countries especially North African and Middle East countries. They have this belief that this if you are holding a Nigerien passport for instance, it may be easier for you to penetrate United Arab Emirates (UAE) than a Nigerian passport because they seem to have sympathy for them. The way you will be subjected to if you are holding a Nigerian passport would be different from the way you will be subjected to if you are holding Liberian or Nigerien passports.
“Again, they believe that Nigerian passport attracts more attention than most of these other small countries. In most cases, some Nigerians apply for lost case and what are the requirements to be qualified as a lost case? Affidavit, police report, declaration of age, but since we realise that there is a lacuna in the system, we now release all the lost cases because once you said you lost your passports, we can trace the passport number and make it invalid.”
The spokesman of the service, Mr. Sunday James could not be reached for comments on his mobile phone when contacted.
