The African Action Congress (AAC) strongly condemns  the arrest of the Coalition of Political Parties spokesman, lkenga lmo Ugochinyere by the Police on Thursday 18th June 2020, in Abuja.

It is unfair and unjust to arrest a fellow compatriot over his views in flagrant violation of freedom of expression as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The essence of freedom of expression is for those who cannot have their way should at least have their say. It is the bedrock of all democracies as opposed to dictatorship, tyranny and autocracy.

If the House of Representatives is aggrieved over the statement made by lkenga Ugochinyere, it should should go to Court and seek redress. AAC uphold that the Court is the temple of justice and last hope of all aggrieved people.

The House of Representatives should be honourable enough to adhere strictly by the rule of law as the elected representatives of Nigerian people.

The continued detention of lkenga lmo Ugochinyere is a violation of his fundamental human rights, and a deliberate attack and intimidation of voice of opposition in the country.

AAC calls on the lnspector General of Police to ensure his prompt release. There is no point overheating the polity amidst COVID-19 pandemic and with Edo and Ondo Gubernatorial Polls just weeks ahead.
