The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai has charged officers and men of the Nigerian Army to redouble their efforts towards ensuring that the current security threats in the country are effectively checkmated. Gen Buratai handed the order to the officers and personnel during a special meeting he had with his Principal Staff Officers, General Officers Commanding and Field Commanders, at the Army Headquarters, Monday in Abuja.

The meeting tagged “Special and Exclusive”, Buratai reiterated the urgent need “for action” by the army to combat terrorists and criminals in the country, saying that it is “a time to change the war narrative and a wake up call to combat Boko Haram terrorism and insurgency, North West Banditry as well as the myriad of other security challenges across the country”.

Among the key decisions reached at the meeting is to shift the location for Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2020 to Katsina state during which a major Army exercise nicknamed EX SAHEL SANITY would be conducted.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Acting director, Army Public Relations, Col Sagir Musa said the Chief of Army Staff told the army “there is no time for complacency, no time for excuses and there will be no tolerance for shorthcomings or failures, the situation must be reversed immediately.”

According to Musa, Buratai has directed all commanders, officers and men of the Nigerian army to ensure that the charge given to the military by President Muhammadu Buhari on security threats in the country must be fully implemented in order to “speedily crush BH terrorism and the myriad of security threats facing the country”. The acting director of army public relations added “The COAS states that the criminals and their collaborators and sponsors must be exposed, flushed out and destroyed”.

In view of this, he disclosed that the Nigerian army has already begun major reorganization of her operations for optimal outcomes. In his words: “ Gen Buratai warned that he wants to see an all encompassing positive changes in the operations and security situation in the country”.

Answering question on the reported lack of synergy among the nation’s service chiefs or what many people described  as no love lost occasioning the mutual suspicion among officers in the military, Musa dismissed the insinuations saying “ I don’t subscribe to it” stressing that “ the military is working in harmony. We always appreciate the services of sister agencies in tackling insecurity across the country.”

On the issue of troops’ welfare, Musa said Gen Buratai takes it as a priority. “We are highly motivated”. He said.
